Outbound & account-based GTM

Find a buyer with an urgent problem; send a relevant reason to talk.

Use it when

You have a narrow ICP, a recognizable trigger and a real offer.

Don't confuse it with

Mass alumni emails, scraped lists, generic personalization or activity goals without opportunity quality.

01 / What companies actually did

Rippling led with busywork avoided

In Matt Plank’s SaaStr discussion, early outreach to startup CEOs emphasized handling employee IT setup alongside HR—not “another HR system.” The message translated product breadth into a founder problem.

The same interview describes brokers and accountants as longer-term referral channels, with investment needed before referrals become consistent.

Merge used early selling to learn

Merge’s founders sent hundreds of cold emails and interviewed 100 companies before building; later they ran founder-led sales for months and tested persona, demo and price in conversations.

02 / How to do it

  1. 01Choose one 50–100 account cohort with the same buyer, stack and credible trigger.
  2. 02Map founder, team, alumni and partner relationships; keep warm and cold paths separate.
  3. 03Build one offer: cost review, migration assessment or working technical demo.
  4. 04Run a short researched sequence with one fact or useful resource per touch.
  5. 05Review qualified meetings, opportunities, conversion and objections weekly; rewrite the message before buying more volume.

03 / What good looks like

Watch this

Qualified meetings/100 accounts; opportunity rate; pipeline/account; win rate; complaints/unsubscribes.

Common trap

Warm introductions and cold-email performance have different economics. Never merge them into one rate.
